Expansion of NH66
  • A busy National Highway that runs north-south along the western coast of India parallel to the Western Ghats connecting Panvel (Navi Mumbai) to Cape Comorin (Kanyakumari), passing through states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
  • The total length is about 1270 kms out of which 482 kms is through Maharashtra (Konkan region).
  • Of the 4 states, Karnataka and Maharashtra to have 60-meter wide highway. The Maharashtra section will be converted into a flexible pavement road with four lanes.
  • The work on the 84-km stretch from Panvel to Indapura, which includes six major and 23 minor bridges, one flyover and pedestrian and vehicular underpasses – will be converted into four-lane.
  • Safe, comfortable and smooth movement of long distance commercial traffic as well as movement of local traffic in inhabited/urbanized areas. Tourists will also get benefit of better connectivity to nearby important tourist places.
  • Tunnels to be constructed across forest or Ghat section. Tunnels to accommodate 4-lane Expressways. One such proposal is the Maharashtra government's proposal of 1.4-km tunnel at the Karnala bird sanctuary.
  • NH66 connects major sea ports of West India, Mumbai, Jawahar Lal Nehru Port at Nhava Sheva, Ratnagiri port, Kollam ports etc.
  • Impact: Trade and commerce in the region have increased due to the expansion of markets for agricultural products and seafood produced in the region connected by this highway. Reduced travel time to Dapoli, traffic-less and hassle-free routes, increase in tourism leading to the strengthening of economies of scale for Dapoli.
  • Update: 143 kms of Mumbai Goa Highway concretized and opened for use.
DMIC (Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor)
  • A planned industrial development project between India's capital, Delhi and its financial hub, Mumbai.
  • Mega infra-structure project of USD 90 billion with the financial & technical aids from Japan, covering an overall length of 1,483 kms between the political capital and the business capital of India, i.e. Delhi and Mumbai.
  • Will run through 6 states: Delhi, western Uttar Pradesh, southern Haryana, eastern Rajasthan, eastern Gujarat, and western Maharashtra.
  • Include the development of the 1,540-km long Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) with 24 nodes (investment regions and industrial areas), including six large investment regions of 200 square kms.
  • Nodes of Maharashtra: Node No.17: Dhule-Nardhana Investment Region, Node No.18: Igatpuri-Nashik-Sinnar Investment Region, Node No.19: Pune-Khed Industrial Area, Node No.20: Industrial Area with Greenfield Port at Dighi. The Node 20 at Dighi region to be developed as a Model Industrial Corridor of Industrial Standards as the ‘Global Manufacturing and Trading Hub’ in Konkan.
  • Significantly reduce travel time from Mumbai to Dapoli making it a 3-hour smooth drive.
  • Status: WIP at a rapid pace, with dedicated freight corridor, expected to be completed by 2021.
Mumbai Trans-Harbour link
  • Nation’s longest sea bridge to connect the city’s twin suburban Navi Mumbai.
  • The 21.8-kilometre long Freeway-grade coastal road, connecting Sewri in mainland Mumbai to Nhava Sheva in Navi Mumbai.
  • Estimated to be completed by 2022. Has received an investment of `14,262 crore (US$2.1 billion), with construction initiated in April 2018.
  • This sea link to contain a 6-lane highway, 27 meters in width, in addition to two emergency exits.
  • A hassle-free and traffic-less transit to provide 70,000 vehicles a convenient, fast route to their destination.
  • Will be linked to the Mumbai Pune expressway in the East and to the proposed western freeway in the west, which would be a zippy drive from Mumbai to Navi Mumbai, therefore significantly reducing the travel time to Dapoli, resulting into a perfect weekend gateway for the ones seeking spiritual fulfilment.
  • Current update: About 15%, 12% and 11% of construction work has been completed on Packages I, II and III of the projects respectively and is expected to complete by September 2022. Meanwhile, the project has achieved a financial progress of 19%.
Navi Mumbai International Airport
  • A greenfield airport project located in Kopra-Panvel area, with an impact radius of a mammoth 1,500 sq.km. Termed NAINA (Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area) – the area will feature mixed-use & infrastructure developments and witness high economic activity and growth.
  • Only 180 kms from Dapoli.
  • Spread across 1,160 hectares, the airport will enable two runways of 4,000 m. Thus, it will be able to host new-generation aircraft like the A380 and Boeing 747-8.
  • Phase 1 includes the development of one passenger terminal and one runway, which is to be commissioned.
  • With an initial capacity to handle 10 million passengers per annum, rising ultimately to 60 million.
  • The initial investment for this mega project is 2.35 bn USD / 15,749 crore INR.
  • Impact: To spur the economic growth for the Konkan stretch. Up the tourism game by attracting more residents and non-residents of India.
